Lake at Hakone -Fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road- (Nishijin textile)
A portion of Utagawa Hiroshige's "Fifty-three stations of the Tokaido road" is woven on Nishijin brocade. Gold and platinum foil are used.
The boldness of the landscape, which is far removed from the actual scenery, and the ruggedness of crossing the mountain pass in Hakone are beautifully represented in this powerful ukiyoe, which combines colored threads in a wide variety of colors. The floating three-dimensional effect of the rock surface is expressed by combining many layers of threads. The luminosity of the lake surface and Fuji with platinum foil, and the umbrellas of people drawn with gold foil, all have a texture and presence different from that of prints, thanks to the sensitivity and techniques unique to Nishijin textiles.
