Red and White Plum Blossoms (Nishijin textile)
Red and White Plum Blossoms (Nishijin textile)
Based on the national treasure "Red and White Plum Blossoms" by Ogata Kōrin, this framed artwork has been meticulously woven using genuine gold leaf.
The original two-panel folding screen features a golden background: on the left panel, mature and subtly colored white plum blossoms; on the right, vibrantly young red plum blossoms. A stylized stream in the center creates an expansive curved shape, highlighting contrasts between light and dark, stillness and movement, and youth and age.
The golden background incorporates doré (mud gold) foil, adding a slightly aged effect. For the stream, not only brown but also gold and green weft threads are woven in, creating a rich and elegant sepia tone. The painting's signature techniques, such as the non-line drawing of plum blossoms, the tarashikomi method seen in the tree trunks, and the exquisite brushwork of the water patterns, are all delicately represented in the weave, capturing the essence of Kōrin's masterpiece.
