Shuhari(守破離)is a concept used in Japanese martial arts that represents a philosophy of learning and mastering skills. It describes the stages of learning to mastery through three phases, each phase promoting the learner's growth and independence.

Shu-守 (Heed): In this initial stage, the learner follows and observes the teachings and techniques very strictly, adhering closely to the instructions of the master or the traditional methods. The objective is to build a solid foundation by understanding and practicing the basics meticulously. Students are expected to learn the rules and apply them precisely without deviation.

Ha-破 (Break): At this intermediate stage, the learner begins to diverge from the strict teachings, exploring and experimenting beyond the traditional methods. This phase encourages critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the principles behind the techniques. Learners start to question and adapt the teachings to better suit their own style and understanding, leading to a more personalized approach to the art.

Ri-離 (Depart)): In the final stage, the learner transcends the teachings, developing an independent style and potentially contributing new insights or techniques to the art. The individual no longer relies strictly on the teachings but integrates them with personal insights and experiences, achieving mastery and a unique expression of the skill.

Shuhari not only applies to martial arts but also to various disciplines, including arts, crafts, and professional practices, as a model for learning, mastering, and innovating within any field.
