A beautiful painting by Utamaro Kitagawa, "Woman with a Glass Noisemaker," depicting a town girl in a checkered kimono that was very popular in the Edo period, is woven on Nishijin brocade.

The feeling of the woodblock being scraped and the texture of the grazed shading of the print are expressed by the foil sutra. The checkered kimono woven with silk yarns shows the texture better than the prints, and the weaver has carefully finished the parts that are very difficult to express by weaving, such as the hairline and the collar, with attention to detail. The three-dimensionality of the skin and the blackness of the hair are not flat but have a sense of texture, which is due to the subtle combination of colors and the wonder of the weaving.
